Spotlight of Coahoma Community College’s Student Government Association
Notable History
Student involvement and leadership can be considered as the main domain of student success stories. Coahoma Community College’s Student Government Association was born from Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School Student Council dating back to 1957.
In the center, holding the book, is Bennie Gooden, who served as the first President of the Student Council at Coahoma Junior College. Bennie Gooden became an avid community leader, playing an important role in the economic development and education in Coahoma County, and he was a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Moments in Time
The first female President elected to serve the Student Government Association was Kirt Staple.
In recent years, the Student Government Association has had to adjust and be intentional about addressing needs during unprecedented times. In 2020, as COVID-19 threatened the safety of our campus, the SGA helped lead the “Keep Coahoma Safe” campaign, prompting making up under the leadership of Demetric Strong Jr., SGA President for 2020-21.
Current
Today, SGA strives to be a beacon of student advocacy and leadership, contributing to a network of student support for success initiatives. The SGA continues to leave a legacy that prioritizes devotion to direct action, community service, and promoting school spirit.
